About Wokingham St Sebastian's Parish

What We Believe

A BEACON OF CHRIST

A beacon is a light or a fire, usually on a hill or tower, which acts as a signal or a warning.   If someone acts as a beacon to other people, they inspire or encourage them.  Jesus Christ said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”   We aspire for the light of Christ to shine before others, so that they may see His good works, be inspired, spirit filled and encouraged for the honour of His name.   We thus become beacons of Christ.

LOVING GOD

Our vision is to become energised by faith with an outward looking focus through our regular ministry and prayers for the community. We want to experience more of God’s love, connect with life by going deeper with God and grow in and share our faith with all in our community and beyond.   We aspire to be Christlike in all Parish ministries: compassionate, contemplative and courageous, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

SERVING OTHERS

We deeply root ourselves in our Parish and partnerships, connect between faith and daily living for missional purposes and respond to local needs through loving service. We have regular worship on Sundays, Wednesdays and special events.   We journey with families at various stages of their Life Events: Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals. We host Fresh Expression services at “The Base”, Little Angels”, Friday Night Youth, monthly worship at Buckler’s Lodge Care Home, Sandwich Men, Cancer Support, Dementia Café (in partnership with Age UK), Bible Studies and Book Club.

A Bible reading from the 60th chapter of Isaiah during this season of Epiphany: “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance." Amen

A Prayer for today Heavenly Father, you have called us in the Body of your Son Jesus Christ to continue his work of reconciliation and reveal you to the world. Forgive us the sins which tear us apart; give us the courage to overcome our fears and to seek that unity which is your gift and your will; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
